Office of the Auditor General Releases Annual Report to the Legislature

Auditor General, Carol Bellringer, released the Office’s 2011 annual report to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba and her annual report following up previously issued recommendations. The annual report consists of 8 Chapters, covering diverse subject matters. Of particular interest is section 6, Special Needs Education.

Asperger Manitoba Inc. is going through the report and going to work to make further recommendations about special needs education. We welcome all members input on this document. If you have any questions or comments, please email us at info@asperger-manitoba.ca

Book Launch – Trueman Bradley Aspie Detective

Please find attached information about a new novel for young people about a detective. The difference is, he has Aspergers, and the story carries us through his challenges and successes in an entertaining and engaging manner.

The book was published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers in London, England, but the author, Alexei Maxim Russell, lives here in Winnipeg. A book signing is scheduled for Dec.3 at 2 pm at McNally Robinson (Grant Park).

News about adult skills groups!

Asperger Manitoba Inc. will be offering another skills-for-living group on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in early 2011!

Three group sessions have already been completed since 2009 and the response to every group has been very positive!

We are now receiving more applicants for the coming year.

Do you have Asperger Syndrome (or a related diagnosis)?
Are you 18 years old or older?
Do you think you would benefit from meeting with a small group of other adults with similar needs to work on skills for living (may include social skills, self-esteem, relationships, communication, non-verbal cues, body language, conversation skills, anger management, anxiety)?
Would you be available Tuesday and Thursday evenings?

If you answered YES to the questions above please complete the application form here. Please note that the form currently says it is for July 2010, it is however a general intake form.

If you applied to another session but were put on a wait list, you do not need to reapply. Applicants on the wait list will be contacted. If you are interested in the group but are not available Tuesday and Thursday evenings at this time, please complete the application form and ask to have your name put on our wait list.

Asperger Manitoba Inc. Announces Board of Directors for 2010-2011

Anne Kresta, President/Chair-elect of AMI, is pleased to introduce our board of directors for the coming year. Returning officers include Andrea Villeneuve (Vice-Chair), Charlene Walberg (Secretary), Bev Larmour (member at large), and Janet Thomson (member at large). Newly elected directors include Damon Schuler, Bryan Kehler, Kris Perlmutter, Linda Liut (Treasurer), Caitlynn Wray, Quinn Senkow and Seb North.

This dynamic group of individuals represents a cross-section of self-advocates, parents, students and professionals who have experience living and working with people who have Asperger Syndrome and other autism spectrum disorders. We look forward to the coming year where new phases of the Asperger Manitoba Resource Centre will be developed and our work will continue in advocating for and promoting appropriate services and supports for Manitobans of all ages who live with AS.

AMI bid a heartfelt goodbye to our outgoing President/Chair, Gene Semchych at our Annual General Meeting. Gene, one of the founders of AMI, stepped down from his position on the board of directors to take some time off from the business of volunteer board involvement. He was instrumental in gaining AMI’s incorporation and charitable non-profit group status and has been a wise, steady and hard-working supporter of AMI’s vision and strategic plan. We will miss his presence in the board room and look forward to seeing him at AMI events and announcements in the future. Enjoy your time away from the board room and know that the invitation is always open for you to consider rejoining us in the future.

Also retiring from the board were Jeremy Strub, who will continue in his role of peer support group facilitator and co-convenor of the adult social group, Vanessa Kimball, who has moved to northern Ontario, and Janine Montgomery, who will continue her research and support of children, youth and adults with AS and their parents through her work as assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at University of Manitoba. We bid you a fond farewell, knowing that our paths will continue to cross in the work that we do.

Membership in AMI is resulting in real change in the supports and services available to Manitobans with AS. Thank you for your continued support.
