Wheelies Roller Skating RESCHEDULED

Wheelies Roller Rink made an error and double booked two private parties for Saturday, January 21st. Because the other group left a cash deposit (we left a cheque deposit), and because they have no record of which booking was made first, the other group has been given the use of the rink for that date and time. Wheelies did apologize and offered us a significant discount on an alternate date, which we have accepted. The new reduced cost is $20/family and the new date is:

As was our original plan, please bring a favourite snack to share, and beverages for your own use can either be brought or purchased at the rink. St. Mary’s Road United Church presents a Hope Ministries Learning Session

What: Many children are diagnosed with ADHD. This disability is somewhat hidden — and yet has huge implications for our classrooms and programs. Understanding these children will help us plan better and include them more fully into our programs.

Asperger’s Syndrome is part of the autism spectrum. Like ADHD it can be difficult to recognize and yet understanding it is vital to including children with Asperger’s in our various programs.

Come experience the following as you learn about Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD:

‘Step into their shoes’– what does it feel like?
What are some common behaviours associated and what can we do to lessen negative behaviours?
What supports are needed to accommodate within our programs
Hands on tools that can be used immediately!

Hope Centre Ministries exists to celebrate the gifts and uniqueness of individuals who live with disabilities and support them in their walk with God and their faith community.

Asperger Manitoba Inc. Presents 3 Asperger 101 Workshops

Asperger 101 is an introduction into the world of children and adults who are living on the autism spectrum. We cover the basics from how this syndrome is characterized and diagnosed and also look at what it might look like in day to day life. Some simple strategies for working with your child or adult are also described.

Youth with Disabilities Support Group

The Youth with Disabilities support group is open for those between the ages 17 – 25.

Location: Society for Manitobans with Disabilities (825 Sherbrook)

Dates: Fridays, starting January 27, 2012 – March 2, 2012

Time: 5:00PM – 6:30PM. Sessions will last 6 weeks.
Cost: Free!

OHEYS Green Circle Spring Break Activity Program

The Green Circle Group is a spring break program open exclusively to children at all levels of the Autism Spectrum to focus on play and social skills in a group activity setting. Join the OHEYS group for a spring break camp that promotes fun activities and social skills. The groups are broken down into ages (4-10, 10-14, 12-19+) as well as level of need (general support or intensive support), 1 1/2 hours in duration.

Each session costs $20, or you may purchase 3 sessions for $50.

Games Club presented by OHEYS

OHEYS is offering a NEW PROGRAM — a “Games Club” evening for ages 10-20 on the autism spectrum/Asperger’s who are interested in playing board games and card games (and also learning new ones) and desire to hang-out with friends. It is pretty clear that as individuals with autism/Asperger’s get older, they have few group friendship opportunities and may mostly be glued to solo electronic devices. In order to make the friend connections in a pro-active way, we are providing a supported activity opportunity for them to connect with peers, where they can find/share some similar interest and have fun. Typical peers will be integrated into the mix on a confidential basis.

Sessions are held on Monday Nights starting January 16 from 6:30-8:00pm at Oxford Bible Church (621 Oxford Street, in Riverheights). The winter session includes 4 meetings (January 16, February 6, February 27 & March 19) at a cost of $60, to be paid at the beginning of the session. If there is still space available you may be able to join late on a prorated basis.

Promoting Flexible Thinking and Interaction With Your Child at Home

Does your child have difficulty with transitions or changes in routine?

Are you interested in learning ways to improve the quality of communication between your child and family members?

Presented by Lianne Belton, Occupational Therapist, RDI® Program Consultant

This series of seven workshops is designed for caregivers only. We will be examining how children with developmental issues or ASD can learn to be flexible in their ability to think and to communicate, and the impact of disability on family interaction. Small changes in the caregiver’s approach to the child can have a big impact on the child’s thinking processes; in each session there will be opportunity for discussion, practice, and a small homework assignment will help you to integrate the ideas once you get home to your child.

The information provided in each session builds upon previous sessions, so please try to attend the entire series.
